This is one of the best songs of the decade and it comes from a slurry little Southern band called Okkervil River; a band that few people outside of indie circles will have any familiarity with. It’s sad and beautiful, but, maybe, hopeful. Hopeful, perhaps, without any other reason than to defy despair.

Though lame old farts like me are just discovering Modest Mouse, they have been around and working their music for over a decade. What's that? Ok 15 or more years.

Other old farts who've covered Mouse over the years are passed them, like Bruce, who ditched his grate fan website of MOUSE in 2004 simply because President Bush made him sicker then Mouse's Music inspired him. GO FOR IT!

Welcome to the world of long term working  INDIE bands. Where fans and the band themselves question everything, and the real goal is to piss off the record label as much as anything. But if you stick to it, and include playing music long enough, the chimps typing in the room theory holds you will bang out an accessible song, or manuscript. And with their long, varied discography, you could probably find a song by Modest Mouse your special someone will love.

Ken from The Dead Guise

The Dead Guise formerly known by the name Ded Guise pronounced "dead guys" came about during a discussion from founding members; Ken Younger, Bill DeSmit, Dan Albers and Dan Cuervo- on what to name the band. "Since we're a bunch of guys who play Dead music, let's call us Dead Guys" exclaimed Ken. Dan noted that to be really "out there" and provide a more original approach that it should spelled the "Ded Guise."

The band came about in the Autumn of 1994 when Ken Younger, Bill DeSmit and Dan Albers got together for a friendly jam session. After a 2 hour jam of the Grateful Dead songs "The Other One-Dark Star", a decision was made to form a group. Dan knew a jazz drummer named Dan Cuervo and the early days were spent playing live at Abernathy's in Walnut Creek, California. Cuervo left after a year for other endeavors and after a brief transition the Ded Guise acquired Kenny Meagher. Kenny was a perfect fit and the group thrived for the next few years playing parties and gigs in the East Bay. They routinely hosted the Annual Jerry Garcia Memorials located in San Leandro, Livermore and Hayward, CA. and played various bars and parties in the East Bay.

In the Fall of 99 the most exactly perfect brother Jeff Faust replaced Dan Albers on bass and the band just kept on playing. More interesting gigs came about and the band would play in Santa Cruz (Brookdale Lodge) and Placerville (Grateful Bear Ranch). 2003 brought in some big changes, first Bill DeSmit left to start his own musical project called "Gravity" and was replaced by John Heffernan on lead vocals and guitar. Second, the band has officially changed it's name to "The Dead Guise"

In the fall of 2004 the Guise finally stumbled upon a keyboardist named James Miller who's talents now fill out for the complete "sound". Check the Gigs link to find out about their next performance dates.

during the seventies (the only "white boys" on

Salisbury Street

) listening to their parents vast blues & country vinyl collection, the funk that flowed out of boomboxes (pre hip-hop), and the psychedelic folk rock that blossomed in the East Bay Area during that time. So it was inevitable that the brothers followed their families lineage of song and dance men (Gr,Gr,Gr,Great Grandpa penned the traditional favorite, "Sweet Betsy from Pike" in mid 1800's. Gr,Gr,Grandpa had a country swing big band that toured the

extensively in the 1910s-1920s), After moving to

Roseville

, Ca the brothers started putting together their first groups in the mid-eighties. (Uncle John's Band, 922, the Homegrown Boogie Band).

 

A WILLIAMS BROTHERS show features intertwining songs and extended improv induced jams fueled by any and all auditory stimulus to have ever sounded, there is no genre or barrier that is considered unusable, all previous artists are an influence in one way or another, it is true old school original jam music. JAMES WILLIAMS vocals are inspired by the grit of JIM MORRISON, the soul of OTIS REDDING and the personal experience of JERRY GARCIA. PHILLIP WILLIAMS plays lead guitar with a deep blues style that is noticeably influenced by JIMI HENDRIX, DUANE ALLMAN, ALVIN LEE and at times with a fluidity that is eerily reminiscent of JERRY GARCIA. Whether solo, together as "ACOUSTIC WB" or with their back-up group THE HOMEGROWN BOOGIE BAND, WILLIAMS BROTHERS shows are always full of surprises & special guests. it is never the same show twice.

 

THE WILLIAMS BROTHERS BAND hit #1 on the mp3.com Blues charts 12/19/06 with JOHNNY THE SQUIRREL, coupled by DEEP ELEM BLUES which was simultaneously perched at #7. DEEP ELEM BLUES went on to hit #1 01/12/07. Both songs spent 4 weeks in the top 20.

 

TWBB has released a total of four albums (Three live recordings & one studio release), and have countless live bootleg recordings circulating throughout the tape trading ranks. Green Tea was formed in the fall of 2000 when a group of local musicians, artists & friends got together to jam. Since the inception Green Tea has been about songwriting, improvisation, musicianship & sharing that energy with a live audience. During the fall of 2005 the band recorded its first studio CD entitled “The Healing”. That debut disc along with a slew of Gigs in the Northeast has pushed Green Tea out onto the Jamband scene.

 

As 2006 rolled along the band picked up momentum and is certain to break out in 2007. Recently Green Tea has been a part of the Annual Music Festival on Block Island, performed for hundreds of new fans in

New Hampshire

&

Vermont

& has been invited to perform at the Rocky Road Music Festival in Louden New Hampshire in April 2007. The band is also currently at work on its second studio album being recorded & produced in West Dover, Vermont at Northern Track studio. The songs for the upcoming CD tentatively titled “Steep” are refreshing, high energy pieces that allow the freedom to jam while maintaining a solid sense of melody & harmony.

 

Like most jam bands today Green Tea thrives on extended improvisation and interplay between the members, but never at the expense of the song itself. Green Tea is fronted by two outstanding vocalists in Toby Kniffin and Jason Jarvis. The band has always been about selling the song and that characteristic is what makes Green Tea stand out among today’s top jam bands.

 

The line-up includes Toby Kniffin on lead vocals and guitar, Jason Jarvis on lead vocals, percussion, harmonica & flute, Jamie Conroy on guitar, John Grady on drums & Joel O’lari on bass. The influences and experience of these five define the sound of Green Tea & the spirit of the music they create. Jeff Gauss

Jeff Gauss is the guitarist and lead vocalist. Performing since 1980 with bands ranging from folk to blues to rock to pop to theatre. Previous bands include Oasis, Envelopment, and Piecework.  He has also been a member of Chris Plata with Extra Hot (featuring Clyde Stubblefield), Barb Bazaldua Band, and Olive Parade.  He also performs with The Lizardz, 3 Day Stubble (featuring legendary blues guitarist John Davis),  solo acoustic shows, and in an acoustic duo with former Weavil Hawk Hawkins.  He has also acted as assistant musical director and guitarist for Act Two/Mainstage Productions/Theatrix's versions of Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita,  and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the Fox Valley area.  He has also worked as a house soundman at the Crystal Corner Bar, the Portal Music Cafe, and The Annex in Madison.  Jeff also mixes for several bands including El Donk and PROG.

Dean Tassone is one of the founding members of The Weavils and the percussionist that sings occassionally.  A seven year alumnus of the award winning Americanos Drum & Bugle Corps, he performed in the band Piecework with Gauss before the formation of The Weavils.  The backbone of the band, he resides in the Fox Valley has also performed with
Little Cisco, the Great Garbonzos, Otto's Jacket, and Father Mac with Geppy.

John Luc Finucan is the keyboardist and vocalist that also plays accordian. He has played with bands throughout the Midwest since 1981 including Thef, Dizzy's Horn, Accelerators, Politix, and the Blue Olives Band- covering styles from jazz to classical, experimental, pop, and blues.  John joined The Weavils in 1994 and resides in Janesville.

"Geppy" is the bassist and vocalist. He joined The Weavils in 1996 after playing with such bands as Alamo and FBNC. Mike has been performing since 1989 and has also played with the Great Garbonzos, Otto's Jacket, Father Mac , and Boneyfingers. He resides in Oshkosh and serves as the main contact for that part of the state.

The brother duo of guitarist Sean Ryan and keyboard ticklin brother Jody has revived what, to many, is a lost sound in bands today. The throw back to sixties rock has become their signature sound and the major reason Uncle Billy's Smokehouse has been gaining the attention and respect of music lovers far and wide.

 

Turning heads every time they take the stage, Uncle Billy's Smokehouse is quickly becoming one of the hottest live music acts in the Northeast. With an in-your-face stage presence, dark and nasty jams and beautiful melodies UBS combines an obvious passion to create unique and emotion evoking music, resulting in rock driven originals that take you back to the good ole days of rock n roll. Named in part as a tribute to their father (Uncle Billy), and a surprisingly inspirational hot-dog cart (Billi's Smokehouse) seen for sale on the side of the road while living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the Ryan brothers Jody and Sean created Uncle Billy's Smokehouse in November of 2000. First formed as a classic rock cover band to feed the brothers need to play music. Uncle Billy's Smokehouse soon grew into a vehicle for Jody and Sean to explore original songs and sounds without any outside influences besides themselves. was the perfect place for Janky to hone his skills playing a variety of styles of music. From the jam sessions with Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction and Banyan to the touring funk band .dias funK, to the king of punk/jazz Willie Waldman, to the L.A. based Pop Killers with guitar great Ronnie Rey Gunn. It was time to return home to the east coast where he quickly started to admire the direction Uncle Billy's Smokehouse was taking their music.

 

Today, Uncle Billys Smokehouse, armed with its hand selected line up, and a bevy of original tunes is resurrecting the soul of rock n roll past. With an all out musical attack of towering beats, heart thumping bass lines, gritty guitar licks, and pounding keys, the band pays tribute to when rock and roll was both exciting and revolutionary. With electrifying performances that leave their audiences exhausted and spell bound, Uncle Billys Smokehouse has been gaining interest from industry big wigs, to kidz in the lot, to the 1960's era flower children, to some of the best bands out there.

this four piece rock out fit has seen their fair of the road in the past three years. Playing shows from Burlington Vermont to New York City the band seems to have found what rock n roll has desperately been in search of for so many years. Songs that have feel good lyrics, intricate composition, and music that fuses the blues based psychedelia of the 60s and 70s with modern day intensity.

 

In March of 2005 the release of their first full length album 'Tracks', has already sold over 1,500 copies without any outside help. The album has quickly gotten the band on the 'must see' list so many bands spend years attempting to reach. The album received a number of very positive reviews from a variety of different types of media, including a cover feature on the March 2005 issue of the nightlife entertainment publication The Pulse Magazine. "One song and you’ll be converted by the power of their blues and funk inflected rock n roll" -Pulse Magazine March 2005.

 

A review by Mick Skidmore, a writer for Relix Magazine for over 20 years says "A hot quartet that is intent on taking the ballsy blues-rock and psychedelic rock of the early 70's and melding it with a savvy 21st century jam sensibility, and on the evidence of their recent Tracks album that was released earlier this year they are doing a pretty darn good job at it!" -Mick Skidmore September 2005.

Tom Constanten announces Shows in Arizona and Las Vegas

Tom Constanten and Ken Foust have released a new CD called “Moved To Stanleyville”. They are playing shows in Arizona and Las Vegas with Gent Treadly, a Manhattan based jam band who were Vince Welnick’s east coast band before his death, in support of this new project. The dates include Prescott College, Tempe, Flagstaff, and Sedona.

Tom Constanten is an American keyboardist, best known for playing with the Grateful Dead from 1968-1970. Tom has been performing in different forms and genres since the late 1950’s, appearing at such popular venues as The Fillmore Auditorium, Playboy After Dark, and the original Woodstock Festival. He was Professor of Music at SUNY Buffalo and the San Francisco Art Institute (1974-1984).  He performed as Artist-in-Residence at Harvard University, and consulted for the Smithsonian Institution.

Ken Foust is a Charlotte, NC musician best known for his jam-blues based project from the early 90’s, Hot Wax (see Spread base, 10/27/1990), that played in the southeast region.  Together they have produced a contemporary Americana / blues effort that is fresh and engaging. These shows will feature songs from the project. This live group also includes Greg Koerner from Gent Treadly on Base and Ken’s Twin Brother Doug Foust on Drums.
